What are some of the signs of vision loss or impairment?

Here are some (but not all) of the signs that indicate possible visual impairments:

  • bring items closer to face
  • squinting eyes
  • closing or covering of one or both eyes
  • complaining that items are blurry and hard to see
  • complaining of blurred, hazy, or double vision
  • eyes exhibiting nystagmus- the involuntary movement, shaking, jerking, or wandering of the eyes.
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (misalignment or crossing of the eyes)
  • difficulty in dark, dimly lit environments
  • finding printed and handwritten documents difficult to see
  • becoming clumsy, struggling to navigate stairs and detect changes in terrain
  • difficulty seeing presentations, written items on the board, and copying notes from any information presented.
  • difficulty staying on the lines of a page when writing
  • eye fatigue, discomfort, eye pain, headaches, and tiredness after straining to use vision.
  • sensitivity to bright lights and glare from lighting
